Hey ya’ll
I keep talking about Emerald city comic con and that’s because it was so much fun. I got so many cool things, an overall life changing experience, and a new perspective to implement in my writing moving forward. I also want to go to a con at least once a year from now on.
I learned so much and felt like I grew not only as a writer but also as a reader as did my inventory of books, graphic novels, art and pins. I wanted to take some time, go through and share them with yall. I feel like you typically do this kind of content in a video format, so if you would like to see that let me know in the comments below.
Let’s start with the books. First I got Sandman Slim, Richard Kadrey. This was a gift that I got at one of the booths by knowing some secret pass code, which I accidentally overheard. The experience of getting it alone made me feel like a baller but I haven’t had a chance to read it. The series is nior urban fantasy about a half human/angel and his adventures. Also the covers really cool. Next, I picked up Sula by Toni Morrison. This doesn’t really have anything to do with the con. I just happened to get it at Barnes and Nobles one night as we were undwinding. The two main characters, in it share a lot of parallels with my main two characters. Making it was a must reread for editing my novel.
The Rule of One by Ashley and Leslie Saunders. These Ladies are twins from my home town. They wrote a killer book about what it’s like to live in a world with a one child policy. It’s so cool. I’m enjoying it so much. I also love supporting other Dallas women. It’s great so far. Next I got BlueScreen by Dan Wales. I got to meet Dan while I was there, which is surreal. The cover is what really caught my eye. It’s very cyberpunky. I’m waiting till the next season of Altered Carbon to pick it up. I’ll need something to cling to after the binge and I know this will be the ticket.
ECCC is a comic con and it would have been a tragedy to leave without getting some. I love comics, so expanding my comic book inventory was a huge plus of this whole trip I purchased The Girl Who Married a Skull, and African Stories, from Iron Circus Comics. Its a collection of stories set in Africa. I breezed through it really really quickly. It’s been a nexus for inspiration for me.
Next, Monstress which I am currently working through. Image comics I’d my favorite comic publisher. Marvel and DC are cool but image is where it’s at for me. So Monstress has actually been on my “read this soon list” for a while now. ECCC was on the perfect opportunity to get the first volume. It’s so good. The art so interesting and captivating. If you’ve played D&D, it’s the perfect, depiction of what it’s like to be a warlock. Do yourself a favor and get this one. Zojaqan is a story about a grieving mother. It is heartbreaking and beautiful. Vagrant Queen is one I haven’t read yet, but it’s about a space princess who doesn’t want to be a space princess. So I’m already there, both are by Vault Comics.
All we ever Wanted is a collection of short stories about utopias, also by Iron Circus Comics. Don’t get me wrong I love a good dystopia, I’m writing one but this is a sci-fi anthology of happiness gives me all the warm fuzzies and I love it. I tore through it fairly quickly. Next, Nairobi, She is Life. This is the one I’m most excited about. One of the writers is Amandla Sterburg, who most people know from as Rue from the Hunger Games or Star from the Hate You Give by Angie Thomas. It’s actually been picked up for a pilot for a Game of Thrones show by HBO. I got to meet the some of the people involved. Still high from the experience.
I got a lot more little things like pins, bags, and notebooks to wear, store the books, graphic novels and notes that really impacted me in. I’m also rocking the gear on my insta so check me out there and scroll if you wanna see some of those goodies. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to do it over again next year. If you like this type of content and would like me to do more or even upload this in video form let me know in the comments down below. Also if you’ve been to a con or were even at ECCC tell me about that too. It is something that I’m so excited to my writers life. Till next time. Create hustle, love yourself.
