6 Things on a Sunday
Starting this week off a little different. How’s it going ya’ll, hope this week has been good for you so far. Last week was full of work, editing and writing distractions for me, but that’s not always a bad thing, definitely not a good thing. Let’s get write into it you see what I did there?
- So writing distractions, my distractions of choice this lately has been the app fall out shelter. If you don’t know it’s a cute little mobile game based on the fallout series. I love it but it’s a giant time suck. Let it be known video games are in my top three favorite ways to waste time. I’m not alone though, turns out 48% of games are girls. I think they’re a fascinating media to tell a story. I’m definitely going to delve more into this topic here in the future brace yourself.
- Other distractions include #ocktromi and #100daysofwriting. I’m having a lot of fun and def want to do another next month. maybe on twiter any suggetstions? Last week on twitter was #DVPit was on and it was awesome. There a some many of us out there and it was so inspiring to see the ideas and stories. Some even reached success. These twitter opportunities are so cool and I look forward to participating when I finally get done with my ms.
- Okay now on to actual writing. Fine tuning my mansucsript has me researching so many things including the weather. Yes ya’ll the most mundane thing every is crucially importing to my ms. How my characters interact with the outside envitment is very important to the story and lets face it there’s only so many ways you can describe rain. This article really helped me out. On that same research note my wip takes place in a city that I’m not familiar with at all I’ve been looking at maps of the city and also searching through insta for city hashtag. I’m trying to get a snapshot of the culture. I’m open to any tips of really getting into the heart of a city. Also I know there are words that I shouldn’t keep in my ms. I’m cutting out the unnessacry words and cliches, this post was super helpful with that.
- Even though I’m a while off form entering the query trenche I’m always scouting for what agents could be a good fit for me. What they’re looking for, and any general tips I can get my hands on. Amy truly bloody on twiter has a collection of agent interviews. I’ve been enjoying reading through them and had to share. On the agent note, Claribel Ortega posted the query letter that landed her an agent. Love love love, when writers do this. Almost all of the query letters I read while professional, really seem to capture the author personality. I hope I can do the same when the time comes.
- As a reader it’s it’s obvious I love to read, and as we all know that reading makes you a better writer. To hone my craft right now I’m working though The Anatomy of Story and Story Genius, links here and here. What I love about these is they both make the mechanics of storytelling simple and easy to understand.
- I heard something this week that really resonated with me. A writer’s worth is not measured in his or her productivity. In participating in #100daysofwriting, been measuring my worth as a writer in word counts. Awesome on any day I write more than 1000 words, but on days I dont. I feel like shit to be frank. Reminding myself kn more than my word count is s hard learn lesson, but one I’m glad to be learning.
Well I’m off to watch reality tv and eat Cheetos till next time. I wanted to start the week with a post for a change. Let’s hope it’s a productive one. Remember create, hustle and love yourself.
